Lighting Design for Empyrean Temple Burning Man 2022

Empyrean Temple
Burning Man 2022

The Empyrean Temple was a large-scale installation at Burning Man 2022 that served as a central space for reflection and gathering, experienced by over 70,000 participants over ten days. As a core member of the lighting team, I contributed across design development, planning, and onsite execution to support the realization of the project’s vision.

During previsualization, I created lighting plots and spatial studies using Adobe Illustrator and Blender, translating creative intent into a technically sound proof of concept. This work informed fixture placement, scale, and lighting behavior, helping align the team prior to fabrication and installation.

I also supported hands-on production, including programming Astera fixtures, fabricating custom lantern components using industrial laser-cutting equipment, and assisting with rigging and strike onsite. The final lighting installation played a key role in shaping the Temple’s emotional and visual impact throughout the event.

This project demonstrates my ability to bridge concept development, technical execution, and team coordination within large-scale, resource-constrained environments.
